Buying alcohol in Singapore

Partially because of the strong Singapore dollar and the booming economy, pretty much everything has become expensive in Singapore. But in the case of some items, the price is additionally high due to high duties.

So when you plan to by anything alcoholic in Singapore, plan for a significant cash outlay. But if you can stomach the price, you’ll find Singapore to be welcoming to the lover of alcoholic drinks.

There are several venues where you can purchase alcohol, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

  • Supermarkets. All supermarkets offer a decent collection of beers. The brands bottled locally are omnipresent: Tiger, Heineken, Guiness, ABC, Baron’s are all bottled at the local Asia-pacific breweries plant and enjoy near universal distribution. Besides that, you can expect to buy Carlsberg. Pretty much any supermarket and convenience store offers wine for sale as well, though the collection can be fairly limited (Giant) to extensive (Cold Storage). Be mindful that while some supermarkets open 24 hours, they are not allowed to sell alcohol after 11pm (or 12am, depending on the location).

  • Speciality stores. Looking for something really special? A visit to a brick-and-mortar liquor store can be a great way to get in the atmosphere. Browse bottles and enjoy the advice of the shopkeepers. Although some liquor stores are manned by students who are just knowledgeable about how to use the cash register, a few pearls have remained that genuinely educate the customer.

  • Convenience stores. 7 Eleven has a great footprint of 24-hour stores in Singapore, as does its local competitor Cheers. They have beer, wine and spirits stocked up, and cold in the refrigerator. Keep in mind though, again, that they will not be able to sell you anything if you reach the checkout counter after 11pm.

  • Online delivery services. It’s becoming more common to buy alcohol online in Singapore because of their huge collection that alcohol delivery services offer, available at a mouse click, along with specialized information about their wares. These delivery websites also offer convenience of not having to lift heavy loads and getting the drinks brought to your door. Most stores deliver at home for free after you spend a certain threshold with them; usually in the S$ 75-S$ 100 range. Believe me, it’s not hard to reach this threshold in Singapore; a couple of bottles will get you there.
